Retirement requires planning. Often financial matters are at the forefront of the conversation. Lifestyle dynamics may not be planned for prior to the lifestyle change, but will often carry a significant impact
Time
You will have time to spend as you wish. It may be beneficial to plan for vacations or hobbies so that you do not find yourself lonely or bored. For those that are working full time, it would not be unusual to recognize friendships are often made through employment. Try to connect with friends outside of the workplace. A support system you had in place prior to retirement may entirely shift. The available time can be a substantial change if you have been working for most of your adult life. Make a list of activities you may want to accomplish in your retirement years. Are you interested in volunteering or joining a club?
Self-Identification
Imagine you meet someone new. What would you tell them about yourself? You may have lost an identifying title. You may no longer be Jeff, the CEO of ABC company, or Emily, the teacher. Do not let this discourage you. It is just another aspect of life to be aware of prior to having that awkward moment of realization. Careers can be tied to pride and/or a sense of being appreciated. Look for ways to experience these emotions in other aspects of life, such as teaching a community class in your field or spending time with family.
Health
You may want to use this time to sit back and relax. You deserve it, but also plan to keep active. An exercise regimen is a form of preventative care. You may find yourself with nowhere to go since you are no longer headed to the office each day. Think about joining a gym or a community fitness program. You may be able to link exercise to your hobbies, such as hiking or dance classes.
Retirement is the time that is often planned for financially, yet the day to day aspects are forgotten. Have ideas ready. Plan to enjoy your retirement.
